Defining IBS

It's a condition that plagues millions of Americans every year, but relatively little is known about it. Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, is a group of symptoms that occur together and classify a condition. The most common symptoms in this condition are abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, cramping, bloating, and gas. It occurs in the colon or large intestine and is caused by improper function of one or more of these organs.

Doctors are still uncertain as to what causes cases of IBS to develop. Many believe that the nerves and muscle fibers are extra sensitive in people with IBS causing muscles to contract too heavily during eating, or nerves overreacting to the bowel stretching, which leads to pain and discomfort.

Unfortunately, IBS doesn't yet have a cure. However, there are things that you can do to promote digestive health and help to alleviate symptoms of the condition. Your doctor may recommend certain medications or dietary changes that can help to diminish the problems associated with IBS. It is also recommended that people with IBS seek out stress relief methods, as increased stress can make IBS worse. Doctors frequently recommend avoiding fatty foods, carbonated drinks, chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, and milk products to lessen symptoms of IBS. Those looking to further their digestive health may also be interested in trying out various digestive health supplements, such as those available through Herbalife, to promote increased health. These supplements help to keep digestive problems such as those experienced with IBS at bay. Check with your doctor before adding new treatments to your current plan.
